COURSE GOALS
We are all amateur scientists. Human
beings cannot help devising theories and hypotheses, collecting data and
drawing conclusions. However, unless we do these methodically, our inquiry
leads us to the untestable conclusions and unsupported certainty. Scientific
method aims at systematizing human inquiry, and the development of the
scientific method is one of the most significant leaps in human history. However, science is not a singular
enterprise. Researching laws of nature and researching societies and the human
beings that comprise them require different approaches and methods. In this
course, we will approach science as a tool to examine and discuss how we can
understand and explain “social reality.” The goal is to extend our
understanding of how we acquire knowledge about human beings, societies, social
structures and institutions, how we pass it on and how we continuously review
it with a skeptical eye. Our focus will be largely on political science and
international relations with some foray into other social sciences.
